STONEYBROOK FARM C.S.A.

WHAT IS A CSA?

At Stoneybrook Farm, vegetables, fruit, and herbs are produced without the use of any artificial or genetically modified inputs. Soil fertility is maintained through the use of cover crops, compost and crop rotations. Stoneybrook Farm is USDA certified organic by Oregon Tilth. At Stoneybrook Farm we believe in preserving farmland for growing food and retaining the agricultural heritage of Northern Virginia. In a C. S. A., (Community Supported Agriculture) members have the opportunity to contribute in their own food chain by making a commitment to share in the harvest of the local farmer. Those who join a CSA, demonstrate their support for locally grown, organic food, and to the farms who are growing it. A CSA brings about a direct correlation between the consumers and the producers. The average vegetable bought at supermarkets or eaten at a restaurant had to travel more than 2500 miles from the farm to the consumer, even worse some food is brought in from countries that use unsafe and unhealthy farming practices. A CSA helps you to know your farmer and visit the farm so that you know where your food is coming from.

CSA Members buy their shares during the winter months, enrolling for the growing season. From June through the end of October we harvest and distribute the vegetable shares to you each and every week during the 20 weeks. The assortment of vegetables and surplus are dependent on the season. In the early months of the year, the amounts are usually smaller, with more salads, peas, radishes and greens. By the summer months, the quantity and variety is at it speak.Towards the end of October, the range of vegetables has diminished. It will be a new experience for some to eat what is in season. CSA members can develop a close connection to the farm by visiting the Farm Stand, U-pick garden, participating in farm workdays, farm festivals, and other events.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Stoneybrook Farm members pick up a share once a week on Wednesdays from June 17th to October 28th at our Farm Market at 37091 Charlestown Pike in Hillsboro Virginia 20132. You will be given a box of produce each week. When com- ing to pick up your box, please bring your empty box back to us so you will have it for the next week.

WHAT’S IN A SHARE?

A Half Share provides approximately 3-10 lbs of freshly harvested produce each week, enough vegetables for 1 to 3 people. A Full Share provides approximately 5-12 lbs of freshly harvested produce each week, enough vegetables for 2 or 4 people. A Robust Share provides approximately 10-17 lbs of freshly harvested produce each week. Given an average harvest, a Robust share provides enough vegetables to feed a family with 4-7 adults eating a vegetable based diet. Each week you will receive 7-12 different varieties of vegetables. You will experience a variety of vegetables that change with the seasons. From early spring with luscious greens and radishes, through the peak of the summer with rich flavored tomatoes, freshly picked sweet corn, green beans, and into the cool days of fall with hearty root vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, winter squash, beets, and kale.

THOSE WHO SHOULD NOT JOIN A CSA

People who’s lifestyles fall into the following categories are not a good match for the CSA program:

  • Those who are away, or on vacation often, (it’s your responsibility to have someone pick up your share if you are gone).
  • Those who do not enjoy cooking, or who eat out frequently.
  • Those who don’t like vegetables or who don’t like trying different foods.

WHAT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY AS A MEMBER?

A CSA eliminates the need for a retailer, so the members not only share the harvest with the farmers, but the distribution of the harvest as well. CSA members must understand what it means to eat seasonally. We won’t have tomatoes for you in June; they’ll come in from July through October. We ask that CSA members understand that a CSA share is based on what crops are coming in for that particular week.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE RISKS OF BECOMING A MEMBER?

By becoming a member, you are sharing the risks of the farmer. If there are hailstorms and they destroy crops, you will get less food that year. If it rains for 2 months straight, some crops will not do well. So you share in the abundance or the setbacks that a farmer has to face each year. However we will do all we can to grow as much quality food as possible.

WHAT IS THE SHARE PRICE BASED ON?

Each fall the farmers go over the farm budget to figure out the operating costs for the next season. They then divide the costs of operating the farm by the number of members. This is the base share price. Generally the Stoneybrook Farm CSA member will save 10-30 percent over the regular retail prices for local Certified Organic produce.

*Everything we grow at Stoneybrook Farm is certified organic, however we are not able to grow enough sweet corn to accommodate all of our Farm Stand and CSA members. So we buy locally grown conventional (non-organic) sweet corn to supplement our own organic sweet corn. All other crops will be our own certified organic food unless otherwise noted.

**Our bread is made from wholesome ingredients, but is not certified organic.
